The Fuk 福 Deity is believed to have been Yang Cheng, a governor of the Hunan province who lived during the Tang Dynasty. A moral and upright person, he saw the distress of his people when those who were born with dwarfism were removed from their families and sent to the imperial palace where they were kept and slaves and forced to perform for entertainment.

Writing a memorandum to the Emperor, he pleaded the cause of the families and of the slaves and appealed for the practice to be abolished. This was a risky move, for the wrath of the Emperor would result in his life being forsaken should his memorandum be read unfavourably.

His gamble paid off, and the slaves with dwarfism who had been forced to perform in the imperial palace were freed and allowed to return to their loved ones.

As a result, Yang Cheng earned the love and appreciation of the people and came to be known as a bringer of happiness, which continued even after his death where he was highly venerated and immortalised as a deity that brought fortune, luck and happiness.
