A well-known of the Shou 寿 Deity is that a sickly young child by the name of Zhao Yen was by a famous fortune teller that he would live a short life. Zhao Yen was told to bring food and wine into a forest and look for two old men who were playing chess. The two old men turned out to be the Deities of the North and South Pole, who fixed the dates of births and deaths respectively.
